Different Skin Types & Different Acids For Each

Blog #010

There are plenty of acids for the skin, but which acids are right for yours? A lot of people are just adding whatever they believe will work, but some could not be doing anything, or doing too much. If you know your skin type it will help you a lot to determine which products you will be needing.

Some of the different types of acids:

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is a natural form of acid that is found in our skin that likes to help keep our bodies nice and hydrated. It is also great as a daily routine for all skin types (especially dry skin) as a moisturiser. The older we get, the less Hyaluronic acid we naturally produce, that is why it is a definite need in our daily lives. Facts say that we lose up to 50% of hyaluronic acid in our skin and bones by our mid 40’s. How crazy is that?!

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is great for the aging skin types, those that are starting to see the fine lines and wrinkles should recommend adding this into their skin care routine. Glycolic is a natural alpha hydroxy which is found in sugar cane. This great acid can help slow down and minimize aging appearance. But it is not just for aging skin, it can also be a great, affective way to attack those annoying pimples too. Although, you do have to be aware that this acid is best used for those who have oily to combination skin as it could irritate your dryer skin types.

Just use a product that has less of a percentage of glycolic acid and start off slow.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is the one you want to go for if you have acne-prone skin. Best for those who have oily to combination skin types.

It is a beta hydroxy acid and it can be found in our bodies naturally and also in fruits or it can be synthetically made.

Salicylic acid definitely does minimize those annoying pimples, but should also only be used for the skin types that are recommended and used sparingly on anyone with sensitive skin because it can be irritating and a little drying. In some cases, it can cause hyper-pigmentation.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is the alpha hydroxy group. I would say this can be used with all skin types, but more on the oilier side. It is a good gentle exfoliant for the skin and can be used to treat several things like, mild acne, clogged pores, pigmentation, wrinkles, sun tanning and dark spots. Citric acids can be made in many forms such as, toners, peels masks and scrubs. Another benefit is that it can help loosen unwanted damaged layers of the skin.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is suitable for all skin types that want brighter, more even and hydrated skin. It is known to be one of the larger molecules of the alpha hydroxy acid group.

It is a water-soluble, but it stays more so on the outer layers of the skin. Because it stays on the outer layers of the skin, it helps to brighten and remove dead skin cells and provide additional moisture to the skin. Lactic acid is one of the first exfoliants you should try if you have sensitive prone skin.

Malic Acid

Malic acid is probably one of the least known acids in the skin care category. This acid can be used by all skin types. As lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid it also helps to encourage skin cell turnover. It is mainly found in anti-aging skin care products because it can help with the production of collagen. Malic acid can help improve the signs of melanin, helping to prevent and reduce hyper-pigmentation.
